| Every Ukrainian town where over 20, 000 people reside in has, at least, one hotel. In small towns, these hotels are commonly of the Soviet time and can be cheap - around $10 USD for a double room. In bigger towns (50-200 thousand residents) you usually find a number of hotels: some are privately owned, others are state-run. Service in Ukrainian hotels Needless to say, there are usually no English-speaking staff members in state-run hotels in small towns, and they offer customers Soviet standards of service and living conditions. If you are a risk-taking young backpacker, you may not care that there's no phone, the beds are somewhat short, the closet door is broken, there's no hot water, and the temperature in your room hovers approximately 16°C. Yet, other categories of foreign travellers are usually dissatisfied with their experience in these out-of-date, state-run hotels. Privately owned hotels are often — but not always — both more expensive and have higher service standards. Some private hotels Ukrainian towns and cities are splendid, but English-speaking staff is still a rarity. In the Carpathian region, there are a lot of wonderful family-run private inns with hospitable hosts and excellent living conditions. Outside the Carpathians, yet, family-run inns and guesthouses are practically nonexistent. Up-to-date hotels following the western level of service and comfort are located in all big cities of Ukraine and in resorts of Crimea and the Carpathians. These hotels often have higher rates than the same ones overseas. This is because there is a shortage of three, four, and five-star hotels, and hence people would rather pay more for comfortable living conditions. Booking a hotel in Ukraine In towns and cities, you can virtually always walk up to the reception desk and reserve a room, provided you have a passport. Yet, in large cities - for example, Kiev, Odessa - you should make a reservation beforehand. Also, remember that there aren't any tourist information agencies that can help you book a room (except for an agency at Lviv airport). Advanced reservation procedures may differ from hotel to hotel. You can book a room over the phone by giving your name and the time you expect to arrive. If you're late, they may give your room to somebody else. Rooms in up-to-date hotels typically need to be reserved via a travel agency or online on either the hotel's website or the site of a travel agency.
