| The word puppet usually brings up an association with kids because contemporary puppet theater is basically oriented on the children audience. This type of theater originates from ancient times. Hand puppet dolls are composed of a head made from various materials, such as wood, papier-mache or cardboard cylinders, and a body constituting a cloth in the form of glove that is put on the hand of puppeteer. When puppeteer moves fingers, the puppet becomes animated. One of the varieties of hand puppets is finger puppets. As it's evident from their name such puppet dolls are put on fingers. They are small and look like children toys. Another widespread kind of puppet dolls is represented by marionettes. Marionette is a puppet with strings attached to various parts of its body. By pulling the strings puppeteer has an opportunity to manipulate the puppet and make it move. Marionettes are applied both for entertainment and in professional puppet theater plays. There is one more interesting type of puppets named shadow puppets. A shadow puppet is a flat figure cut out in such a way that, when using a directed source of light, it produce a shadow of a certain personage on a translucent screen. Shadow theater was invented in Asia in the 5th century. It used to enjoy wide popularity in various parts of the world. These days shadow puppet theater is extremely popular in Indonesia. |
